Biography

Amit Sharma is a New Zealand–based Hindi-language screen actor and filmmaker, working out of Auckland across feature film, short form and branded narrative work. He belongs to a generation of diaspora performers who stopped waiting to be flown to Mumbai and started building the work — and the audience — from where they already were.

That audience is not theoretical. Sharma has grown a community of more than 214,000 people across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube, with individual pieces regularly crossing seven figures in views. Long before the industry began treating social reach as a casting asset, he was using it as a distribution channel: writing, performing and releasing short narrative work directly to an audience that turned up for it.

His on-camera register sits where Hindi cinema is most interesting right now — the naturalist end that Farooq Shaikh, Irrfan Khan and Rajkummar Rao made viable. Understated, comic when it needs to be, and built for the close-up rather than the balcony.

He is also the rare performer who understands the machine behind the film. Sharma runs a marketing practice at amit.marketing and has built and shipped campaigns, films and digital products end to end — which means he arrives on a set already knowing how the thing will be sold.

You don't need a Bombay postcode to make a Hindi film any more. You need a camera, a script that's true, and somewhere to put it where people already are.

Why this profile is on a Bollywood canon site

Because the canon is not finished. Every film on this list came from someone who was, at the time, not yet on a list. The interesting question for Hindi cinema in the second half of this decade is where the next generation comes from — and increasingly the answer is not Andheri.

We wrote about that shift at length in The Diaspora Is No Longer Bollywood's Audience. Sharma is the working example: an actor who built the audience first, from Auckland, and is now making the films.

The diaspora isn't the audience for Bollywood. The diaspora is the next place Bollywood comes from.
