What is the greatest Bollywood movie of all time?
On this list it's Sholay (1975), directed by Ramesh Sippy. It is the only Indian film that plays continuously in the national bloodstream — dialogue, sound design, silhouette. It holds the top position on a tiebreaker we state openly: when two films score alike, the one that is harder to imagine Hindi cinema existing without goes higher.
How were these 100 films ranked?
Four weighted criteria — Craft (30%), Consequence (30%), Durability (25%) and Reach (15%) — with a stated tiebreaker. The full scoring model, the boundaries we drew, and a list of the placements we think we got wrong are in the methodology.
Is Bollywood the same as Indian cinema?
No, and the difference matters. Bollywood means the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai. India also has major industries in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi and more. Some of the greatest films made in India — Pather Panchali, Nayakan, Elippathayam, Sairat — are not Bollywood films, which is why this list does not rank them.
What is the oldest film on this list?
Awaara (1951). The canon is thin before 1950, and honestly so: roughly 70–80% of Indian films made before then are simply lost, and availability shapes any canon more than critics like to admit.

Which decade was the best for Hindi cinema?
The 1970s produced two entire cinemas at once — the Salim–Javed masala film and the parallel movement — and remains the most consequential. But by quality-per-film the 2010s have the strongest claim: streaming money gave small, specific films distribution for the first time.
What is the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time?
Dangal (2016), reported at ₹2,023.81 crore worldwide — and roughly three-quarters of that came from China rather than India. Nominal rupee figures are close to meaningless across eras, though. Who was the most bankable Bollywood actor?
It depends entirely on the decade, and the answer for the 1960s is one almost nobody names: Rajendra Kumar, nicknamed "Jubilee Kumar" because his films kept completing twenty-five-week runs. The 1970s had two answers because the handover from Rajesh Khanna to Amitabh Bachchan happened mid-decade.
